Bitcoin Energy Use vs. Streaming, AI, Social Media: 2025 Data Analysis

In 2025, Bitcoin mining consumed approximately 171 TWh, which was about 16% of the total energy used by data centers, according to reports. Traditional data centers globally consumed between 448 and 1,050 TWh. AI-focused facilities consumed an estimated 82 to 536 TWh, accounting for 11-40% of all data center energy usage. Traditional data centers, including those supporting cloud computing, streaming, and social media, accounted for over 388 TWh in 2025. Projections for 2026 estimate that AI data centers will consume 40% of total data center electricity. Bitcoin's energy consumption is notably less than that of AI, video streaming, and social media.
